    Study Plan for Geological engineering

    Study Plan for Geological engineering

    Study Plan for Geological Engineering

I am ……, born on ... of February; xxx. I have completed my undergraduate program in Applied Geology from the University of .............. I have, after very careful consideration of my abilities, academic background, and career goals decided to pursue my graduate education in MS Geology.

My undying optimism was rewarded when I was worked on Triassic and Jurassic rocks in my final year thesis of BS. I would like to carry out research on Datta Formation of early Jurassic as “Reservoir Characterization of Datta Formation, NW Himalayas, Pakistan” because a comprehensive study is required to elucidate the depositional regime of the Datta Formation in Hazara Basin, Kala Chitta, and the Salt Range. In addition to this, complete reservoir characterization (description of facies association, diagenesis, clay types, distribution and pore geometry, porosity and permeability with the help of all available data), its suitability for shale gas reservoir and geochemical analysis by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and by wet geochemical methods, all these aspects are needed to explore and evaluate the hydrocarbon leads.

Oil and gas play an indispensable role in the development of any country. It was the field of petroleum geology that captured my interest. With a solid background in the knowledge of fieldwork and laboratory analysis I am confident that I will strongly follow and participate in the master courses. My motivation to apply for the MS program is that I feel a curiosity to learn more about Geology and then apply the knowledge to make significant contributions through my research. Obtaining a higher education from this program provides me with the opportunity to enhance my knowledge and increases my ability to contribute to the advancement of scientific research.
China is considered to be the world’s best in the field of Science and Technology. One of the reasons attributed to this status is that there are Universities, which work, in close association with the oil and gas sector giving ample scope for the students to get exposed to the latest trends.
Thus, factors such as better research facilities, an effective Field-University collaboration, flexible course structure, have made China the most natural choice for me to pursue my graduate studies. I chose China, because (1), as many as million of science and engineering students graduated from Chinese universities, for my higher studies, Pakistan & China share Centuries-old ties, which have steadily grown into a binding bond, between the Peoples of our two Great Nations (3). I am much confident if I am given this opportunity to study in this prime university to enhance my skill sets and to go for the research in this area for future endeavors. The .................. University is one of the largest universities in China. It features a strong, characteristic profile in the fields of Science and Technology. The main educational objective of University is to provide a solid knowledge of the basic science subjects and a high level of expertise in the various fields of specialization, fostering the students' capabilities to transfer research results into economic and technical applications.

I want to serve my country, my people, and to the oppressed and depressed people of the whole world by serving in the field of Geology. I find your university the right place to pursue a degree because of its international standing, excellent overall facilities and its reputation for producing individuals who are ready to take leading positions in the industry and society. My immediate goal is to pursue my Master’s program at your esteemed institution. On successful completion, I would like to continue with my Ph.D. Learning what has already been propounded is one thing. Propounding what posterity will learn is something else. For me, long-term goals are easy to portray. Coming from a rapidly developing nation, I feel that I can utilize the skills, I can acquire during my period of study at your institution to the fullest extent in my home country. My dream is to be a part of the team of your master students and faculty members whom I can learn from and contribute to so that I can be equipped to face the challenges in the future when running along the path that leads to my goals. I would regard my admission not only as a great honor and success but also as an obligation for hard work. It will help me to sharpen my weak areas, strengthen my concepts and practical experience.

    Study Background
I am Muhammad Riaz. I was born and brought up in Pakistan. I have done BS Applied Geology (2006-2011) from the “University of the Punjab” Lahore, Pakistan. I did my BS with special emphasis on Microfacies analysis of Kawagarh Formation. After that I have completed my M.Phil (2011-2013) Applied Geology (Petroleum and Structural Geology) from the same university. Presently I am enrolled in PhD program and working as a research assistant in the Institute of Geology, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. I have a couple of research publications which are under review.
I love science and to learn about the Earth. I want a career where I can travel a lot, discover exotic places and work internationally and in different countries. I seem like a good major with all field trips and I have read that job prospects for geologist are good. If possible I would want to study in foreign countries.
Motivations for applying for this program
A PhD, is a place not just to complete a thesis, it is a place to train yourself, and be trained by others in the possibilities that exist, or that potentially will exist with the knowledge you are gaining. And I think I would be able to achieve such motivations from this Scholarship.
My motivation to apply for this program is that I feel a curiosity to learn more about the Geology field and then apply the knowledge to make significant contributions through my research. Obtaining a higher education from this program provides me with the opportunity to enhance my knowledge and increases my ability to contribute to the advancement of scientific research.
    Goal of Study
From the life I want to get as many as I can and I want to be useful to people and my main goal in life is to get a higher education and competitive profession, so I can work in the chosen profession and regularly improve it as far as possible. I think this university “China University of Geosciences Beijing” has everything that I want and all what I need. I want to apply “Geology” very interesting with great potential for career advancement and further education. I have read a lot of your educational institution and if I can say, I fell in love with it. I love that students can communicate with teachers freely like with friends, little classes is big plus too, because than teacher can concentrate on every student. It’s so lovely how much useful practical knowledge your high school can give, how great it is to meet people from different countries and make them as your friends.
    Detailed Study plan
My research tittle is “Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphic framework of the of Eocene Limestone (Chorgali Formation) Pakistan”
The proposed investigation will focus on the Chorgali Formation of Eocene age, Pakistan. Regional distribution of the sedimentary sequence is well known in the Salt Range and Potwar Basin. Macroscopically the Chorgali Formation is well defined. However, knowledge about facies associations, lateral and vertical facies amalgamations, stratal geometries and palaeo-environments is still poor. An integrative sedimentological and sequence stratigraphic analysis is almost missing. Knowledge about these points is basic requirements for an adequate interpretation of the development of Indo-Pakistani plate margin. The Salt Range, Potwar Basin and Hazara basin is an excellent place to resolve the complex palaeogeographic, palaeoenvironment and sedimentation dynamics through time and space.
    Research Objectives
    1) To study and observe the lithology, depositional condition, sedimentary structures, rock types, contacts and fossils of these areas.
    2) Precise field records of geological and paleontological data as well as sampling strategies that consider the vertical and lateral variation in these data are vital for the success of microfacies studies. Laboratory methods study microscopic features and geochemical data.
    3) One of the important objectives is the sub-surface interpretation through core- analysis and wire line data logs.
    4) To present possible provenance of the Chorgali Formation.
    5) To present depositional settings of the Chorgali Formation.
    6) To evaluate economic significance in the Chorgali Formation in the field area.
    Research Methodology
Field methodology will include sampling, section measurement and photography of rock outcrops. In laboratory the thin sections will be prepared for petrographic analysis. Samples will also be prepared for paleontological studies under microscope. Petrographic study will be supplemented by; whole rock analysis for determination of major element concentration in rock sample, diagenetic study and identification of clay minerals using SEM, XRD analysis of selected clay samples, XRF spectrometry of selected samples, Stable isotope analysis of Carbon and Oxygen for interpretation of paleoclimatic conditions, grain size analysis of selected samples, Seismic, wireline and core data from Potwar Basin will also be studied.
    Expected Results of the Research
This research will characterize the facies architecture of selected sections of the Chorgali Formation, and examine sedimentological, petrological, mineralogical and geochemical character within these intervals. Reorganization of sequences will enable sedimentary rocks to be divided into genetically related units bounded by surfaces with chronostratigraphic significance. Sedimentology and palaeo-environmental models for the Eocene Sequence is an essential component of establishing future hydrocarbon production and development strategies. Lithological variation in the Chorgali Formation will detect relictic hints of depositional environment. Comparison with well data from northern oil-producing Potwar Basin will be interesting not only for academia but also for industrial purposes.

Geosciences (Geology) research proposal / Study plan for PhD or Masters Students

    Program: PhD in Geosciences (Geology)

There is a very famous adage, “If you think education is expensive, and then try ignorance”. I could not agree more. I believe research is necessary to acquire data and formulate theories, but it is just as important to know how to apply those theories and use that data in the real world. To be competent and competitive I will require a PhD’s degree. A PhD’s degree will give me the up-to-date tools and knowledge that is the need of the hour.

It is after a good deal of self-evaluation that I have decided to pursue graduate studies in Department of Geology and National centre of Excellence in Geology University of Peshawar leading to a doctorate. This decision followed naturally after carefully considering my academic background, the areas of my interest, and my ultimate professional ambition, which is to pursue a research career, either as a teaching faculty member, or in a department of the industry.

My postgraduate education at the National Centre of Excellence in Geology University of Peshawar Pakistan has provided me with a strong and comprehensive background in Geological management. The curriculum included all the basic courses such as Applied Geology, Sedimentalogy, Biostratigraphy, Sequence Stratigraphy, Structure Geology, Geo Chronology and Palynofacies analysis.

I was highly impressed by the Geological Science and its vast applications in my BS and M.S studies. My special interest in Carbonate Sedimentalogy and Biostratigraphy .Taking this into concern, I publish research paper in international and national repute journals.
A good research career can only be built above the firm foundation of a good education. With my long term goal in mind, my immediate objective is to work towards a PhD in carbonate sedimentalogy Biostratigraphy and reservoir characterization of Paleocene age.
The Goal of my Ph.D is to detailed description of the microfacies and lithofacies association for reconstruction of depositional environment of the Paleocene age.
Integration of biostratigraphical and sedimentological data to reconstruct a chronostratigraphically constrained palaeo-environmental interpretation. Results will be presented in the form of chronostratigrphic charts, maps and cross sections.
The resulted data will be used to construct a sequence stratigraphic framework which will significantly reduce risk during exploration, appraisal and development.
Detail description of the Paleocene reservoir characteristics, outlining diagenetic overprints and modification of the depositional rock properties in a sequence stratigraphic framework. Therefore, the reservoir architecture and the controls on reservoir potential will be evaluated. The surface data will be compared with the subsurface to demonstrate the relationship between the surface and subsurface reservoir characteristics of the Paleocene age.
To determine the O-C-Sr isotope geochemistry to characterize the diagenetic fluids and trace the fluid pathway.
To determine the porosity and permeability distributuon of the Paleocene age which will determine the petrophysical (porosity and permeability) character of the Paleocene age limestone.
Having done my undergraduate and postgraduate studies at undoubtedly in the best institutions in Pakistan, I would consider it my privilege to be able to pursue my doctoral studies at your university and avail of the excellent infrastructural facilities and research opportunities it has to offer. I am sure that the stimulating academic environment and interaction with the distinguished faculty at your university will prove immensely fruitful and facilitate my development as an individual researcher in my field. I am confident that I would be able to make a positive contribution to on-going research work at your university.

I feel that with its comprehensive facilities and competent faculty doing quality research work in the field of Geosciences will be the ideal place for me to pursue graduate studies. The working atmosphere of a vigorously active department will be helpful in motivating me towards excellence.

In short, I believe that a good Ph.D program is an essential step for realizing my professional ambition of becoming a competent researcher. I also believe that I possess the motivation, intellectual ability and preparation to do justice to a demanding Ph.D program.

I, therefore, look forward to joining your department as a graduate student.
